American Flatbread – Flatbread Kitchen
Friday and Saturday March 1+2, 1996
Tonight’s menu and baking are dedicated to
Community Heroes
I saw a story on the TV news
A few weeks ago.
It said Americans
Are not volunteering
The way they used to.
Boy Scouts of America: down 27%
The Red Cross: down 62%
One high school of almost 600 students
Could only muster five parents
For the PTA
They decided to disband.
Maybe we’re just too busy anymore. Too busy going to market. Too busy watching TV. Too busy trying to make ends meet. Maybe it’s just that we don’t care enough anymore. (That would be the saddest of all.)
This dedication is for all the people who still find time to serve on the school board, help paint the church, make meals for shut-ins, work with kids , give blood, sing in the choir, pick up litter, watch over the land and water and air—and in a thousand other ways, give of themselves without preconditions or expectations of reward.
Love,
George
